Great question. I'm hoping someone can correct/add to my answer because I'm still trying to understand this too. As far as I understand duality is the state of not understanding that we are one with God. It is seeing ourselves separate than God. It's not seeing everything as part of God. It's an attachment to maya. Maya includes our thoughts so its also when we act via our own ego rather than realizing God's will. When we finally are able to let go of our duality, we are liberated/jivan mukht. The way to getting rid of this duality is stopping attachment to maya. We can stop it by doing simran and sewa, reading our prayers, etc.

StrongKaur Ji - Your answer is very simple and clear. Thank you! To the questioner, I will simply add that the natural tendency of the negative mind is to doubt and mistrust. The natural tendency of the ego is to see the world and other people in relation to oneself rather than "as things are." Being "consumed" by duality means that you give over your thoughts and emotions into doubt. Whatever you put your attention on grows larger in your life. It's like watering a plant. The plant that is watered grows and the one that is not withers and dies. You have control, if you take it, in that you can consciously decide what you want to focus your thoughts on. If negative thoughts become just like little clouds that come and go, but your focus is on the big sky itself, then you will feel inspired by the vastness of the sky rather than disappointed that it is cloudy. Get what I mean? That's why StrongKaur says that doing japa, simran and sewa, reading our prayers and meditating is the way to come out of duality. Water the plant of your devotion and meditate on the vastness of the One, don't water your doubts. Just let them wither and die.
