Actually it's the reverse. Children can actually help clear the karmas of the parents. The benti of the child's simran and japa affects 7 generations forwards and backwards.
Parent's karma does not directly become the children's karma, but patterns of destructive behaviour learned from parents when young can cause the child to imitate those behaviours thereby incurring new karmas for themselves.
