In the widely used English translation by Dr. Sant Singh Ji of the Siri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, he translates ਭਾਈ (Bhaiee) which literally means brother(s) as "siblings of destiny." I think he did this in order to both avoid sexism (siblings rather than brothers) as well as to show that we are brothers and sisters in Sadhsangat and that if we are hearing Guru Ji's words, that we have a "great destiny written on our forehead" ਜੈਸੀ ਕਲਮ ਵੁੜੀ ਹੈ ਮਸਤਕਿ ਤੈਸੀ ਜੀਅੜੇ ਪਾਸਿ (As God's Pen has written on your forehead, so it shall be with your soul.)
